Why We Fast in Ramadan?

1. To Obey Allah’s Command

Fasting is an obligation upon all adult Muslims (except those exempted) and is an essential act of worship to submit to the will of Allah (SWT).

2. To Attain Taqwa (God-Consciousness)

Fasting instills self-discipline, patience, and spiritual purification, helping Muslims to avoid sins, increase prayer, and strengthen their faith.

3. To Experience Gratitude & Empathy

By refraining from food and water, fasting helps Muslims develop gratitude for their blessings and feel empathy for the less fortunate. It encourages acts of charity (Zakat & Sadaqah) and kindness.

4. To Purify the Soul & Seek Forgiveness

Ramadan is a month of repentance and mercy. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

📖 “Whoever fasts during Ramadan with faith and seeking reward, his past sins will be forgiven.” (Bukhari & Muslim)

Fasting helps cleanse the soul, seek forgiveness, and develop a closer connection with Allah.

5. To Strengthen Discipline & Self-Control

Fasting teaches self-restraint over desires, including food, drink, and negative behaviors like anger and gossip, promoting patience and mindfulness.

6. To Unite the Muslim Ummah

Ramadan brings Muslims together in a shared act of worship. Whether through Taraweeh prayers, Iftar gatherings, or charitable acts, fasting creates a sense of unity and brotherhood among believers.
